 LSE е основан през 1895 г. и с течение на времето се превръща в един от най-важните университети за социални науки в света. В международните класации на университетите името му стои редом с тези на  Харвард, Калифорнийския университет в Бъркли и Станфорд.
Общо 16 носители на Нобелова награда по икономика, мир и литература са възпитаници или преподаватели от LSE. Първият от тях е Джордж Бърнард Шоу, един от основателите на LSE, който е удостоен с Нобелова награда за литература през 1925 г. Най-новата е получена от професор Кристофър Писаридис, професор по икономика в LSE и притежател на Norman Sosnow Chair in Economics, който е удостоен с Нобелова награда за икономика през 2010 г. Той е сътрудник на Центъра за икономическо представяне в LSE и на Центъра за изследвания в областта на икономическата политика.
LSE е създал глобална мрежа с малък брой висококачествени университети в целия свят. Има многостранни институционални академични партньорства с Колумбийския университет (Ню Йорк), Sciences Po (Париж), Пекинския университет (Пекин), Националния университет на Сингапур и Университета на Кейптаун.

Стипендии

Университетът отпуска заем на студентите от бакалавърските програми. Този заем покрива цялата им семестриална такса и връщането започва, когато студентът завърши, започне да работи и годишният му доход надвиши 21 000 паунда.
Студентите от икономическите специалности може да кандидатстват и за винансиране от ESRC. Студентите от хуманитарните специалности и изкуствата може да кандидатстват за стипендия от AHRC.

Такси

Бакалавър: 8 500 паунда на година
Магистър: 3 000 – 28 000 паунда на година
